If you are reading this then most likely you are one of the millions of people who suffer from heartburn and are also trying to find a way of how to get rid of heartburn. This painful disorder, also known as acid indigestion, is an irritation of the esophagus caused by acid that refluxes from the stomach. That burning sensation you feel is caused by gastric juices eating away at the delicate esophagus lining.
If not treated properly, heartburn can become a larger more complex problem known as dyspepsia or indigestion. If you experience chronic frequent heartburn this may lead to what is referred to as GERD (gastroesophageal reflex syndrome).
So, what we need to do is take a closer look at how to get rid of heartburn, to not only find relief but to also prevent it from becoming a more serious problem.
Apart from the burning sensation that you experience in your chest there may be other signs that you have heartburn. For instance, you might feel an upper abdominal pain that usually occurs after a meal or you might have a sense of over-fullness after eating a meal.
With frequent heartburn that won’t go away you might experience some of the following symptoms that may be an indicator of GERD:
- Painful and / or difficulty swallowing
- Hoarseness or wheezing
- Dramatic weight loss
Now that you know the indicators and symptoms let’s look at how to get rid of heartburn.
How To Get Rid Of Heartburn:
The first thing you need to look at is your diet. There are many foods you can eat that won’t cause acid reflux but there are also foods to avoid.
Spicy, fatty and fried foods need to be avoided along with acidic foods. For instance, anything that has a tomato base such as soups or ketchup. Also, drinks that contain caffeine or are carbonated tend to cause heartburn.
Eat smaller meals throughout the day and eat slowly being sure to chew your food to mush or liquid form before swallowing. When eating your meals do not drink cold liquids but if you must try to drink no more than a half glass of room temperature water.
Another safe and natural way to get relief is to take plant enzymes that contain protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase with your meals. This will help to break down food for better and easier digestion. It has also been found that EFAs (essential fatty acids) such as fish and flax oils along with borage oil is good to reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

Drinking diluted aloe vera juice or syrup between meals daily may help with irritations in your stomach. Also, do not lie down for at least 3 to 4 hours after a meal to prevent any type of acidic juices from refluxing back up into the esophagus. It is also known that you should lay on your left side when sleeping to prevent stomach acid from coming back up.
Of course, some of these suggestions may or may not work for you. It’s basically a matter of trial and error that will help you to determine what is best for you. Hopefully, you will find what works and finally figure out how to get rid of heartburn once and for all.
