There are a lot of people who experience painful acid reflux symptoms but are not even aware of exactly what they are or there causes. In fact, there are people young and old who experience these symptoms on a daily basis. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD is the medical term for the condition that is known to bring about the symptoms of acid reflux.

There are a variety of symptoms that GERD produces and here are some of the most common symptoms experienced by people with GERD:

Heartburn. One of the primary symptoms of GERD is heartburn. This is the burning sensation that heartburn sufferers feel that spreads from the stomach up into the chest and sometimes all the way up to the throat. Heartburn may occur, depending on the individual, after doing certain activities like eating a heavy / large meal, lifting something heavy, bending over, or lying on your back. Typically, people who suffer from GERD may notice that they experience more severe pain in the evening compared to their symptoms during the day.

Dyspepsia. Another symptom of GERD is dyspepsia. In fact, almost half of the people who experience GERD have this symptom. The symptoms of dyspepsia usaully consist of pain or at least a discomfort in the upper abdominal area, nausea after eating a meal, and / or a feeling of fullness even before finishing a meal.

Regurgitation. For this symptom, a person who has GERD / severe acid reflux would typically have stomach acid “refluxing” back up into their throat. There are even times when acid regurgitates back up into the mouth which is described as a “wet burp”. Sometimes, in a more severe case of GERD / acid reflux, this may also result in a full regurgitation.

Chest Pain. There are times that people with GERD will experience a sensation that feels like food is trapped behind the breastbone. While chest pain is common for those people who have existing heart conditions, chest pain associated with GERD should be differentiated from chest pain that is associated with heart conditions.

Acid Laryngitis. In less common instances, people who have GERD may also experience symptoms in their throat. Acid laryngitis is usually associated with acid reflux symptoms. This symptom would entail dry cough, hoarseness, sensations where there is a need to clear the throat repeatedly, and the sensation of having a lump in the throat.

Dysphagia. People who have this symptom usually describe it as having difficulty swallowing. In severe cases, there are times a person may actually choke on food and the food will become trapped in the esophagus which in return causes severe pain in the chest. This may also indicate that there is a temporary spasm in the throat.

Severe Coughing. People with this symptom will experience severe coughing as well as wheezing. This is a result of acid burning the throat.

Chronic Nausea and Vomiting. There are times that severe nausea and vomiting will also be experienced. There are even times that this could persist for weeks or even months. If this is not traced back to have been caused by an upset stomach then this might be associated with GERD.

These are some of the more common acid reflux symptoms that are experienced by people with GERD. In case you have such symptoms then you might consider talking to your doctor or health care provider right away to make sure that proper diagnosis is initiated and an effective treatment plan to correct the condition is started.

Studies done by several medical institutions revealed that approximately twenty-five million adults experience acid reflux on a daily basis. So, what are the causes of acid reflux? What are some of the acid reflux treatments available? These are some of the questions I would like to tackle to help you get some relief from acid reflux.

Let’s first take a closer look at what causes acid reflux.

Basically it’s a condition where gastric juices back up into the esophagus, creating a burning sensation known as heartburn. The esophagus doesn’t have the same protective lining as the stomach so when acid juices back up this damages the lining which causes the burning sensation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It can be so severe that the acid juices can “reflux” all the way to the voice box and the back of the throat. Typically this happens more often at night or early in the morning because it is easier for the acid to back up into the throat when a person is lying down.

At least half of frequent heartburn sufferers believe that it is not possible to live heartburn-free or not experience some sort of acid reflux. More than 90 % say that frequent heartburn negatively impacts their quality of life. So with these figures in mind let’s cover some of the causes of acid reflux to help you get a better understanding of what it is then we’ll cover some of the natural remedies for acid reflux that are available.

First let’s cover what is it?

Acid reflux is known in the medical community as GERD which is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder. The term GERD is used to describe a group of conditions involving reflux. Basically, it’s a digestive disorder in which hydrochloric acid, enzymes and partially digested food backs up into the esophagus. The acid that backs up into the esophagus causes damage because the lining is very delicate and is not designed to withstand the caustic effects of stomach acid.

What are some of the causes?

Wouldn’t apple cider vinegar and acid reflux only make things worse? Believe it or not it actually has helped many people find the relief they have been searching for without using prescriptions or over-the-counter medications. To see how apple cider vinegar works in treating acid reflux let’s take a closer look at ACV.

Most people are familiar with the distilled white vinegar you can find at any local grocery store. This kind of vinegar is typically used for things such as pickling, cleaning and might even be used in some natural remedies for acne or cuts and scrapes. Typically, people with acid reflux tend to avoid many foods that they know will cause their symptoms to flare-up. However, there are many different types of foods you can eat eat that won’t cause that burning sensations to occur. Unfortunately, most sufferers aren’t aware of the many healthy, delicious and nutritious foods that are available.

Instead they usually have a list of acid reflux foods to avoid. In this article I would like to not only cover alist of some acid reflux foods to avoid but also foods you can enjoy along with some of the causes. So, to get started let’s cover what are some of the causes.

Basically, it’s a digestive disorder caused by partially digested foods and stomach acid that back up into the esophagus. This happens because the lower esophagus muscle doesn’t close properly. This allows the stomach contents to reflux back into the esophagus. The stomach acids then erode the delicate esophagus lining thus causing that burning sensation most  sufferers are familiar with (see how to get rid of heartburn).

There are many factors involved that can cause this to happen such as diet, lifestyle and certain foods to name just a few. Lean Meats and Poultry

Choose lean cuts of meat and cut off all visible fat that you can before cooking because fatty meats tend to contribute to the build up of stomach acid thus causing a “reflux” to occur. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the protein in lean meats and poultry helps strengthen the muscles in the esophagus.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Whole Grains

Whole grain foods that contain fiber rich properties such as whole-wheat pasta, whole-wheat or multi-grain bread, whole grain cereal, oatmeal, bran flakes, oat bran muffins and brown rice are easy to digest and suppress acid reflux. Whole-grain foods also provide a feeling of fullness to satisfy your appetite without risking digestive problems, such as indigestion, caused by fatty foods.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables also have high amounts of fiber along with antioxidants which protect against cell damage from oxidation. According to Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology, fruits such as apples, berries, melons, peaches, pears and bananas tend to help keep it from occurring. Certain fruits tend to be acidic such as lemons, grapefruits and oranges. These fruits should be avoided since they can trigger your acid reflux. Most vegetables with the exception of tomatoes, fried or creamy style vegetables, are safe to eat.

Now that you have some ideas of what foods you can enjoy let’s look at some acid reflux foods to avoid.

  • meats that are fatty
  • basically anything fried
  • tomato based products
  • acidic fruits such as oranges, lemons, grapefruits, etc…
  • pastries and chocolate

This is just a small example of the many acid reflux foods to avoid. I’m sure you can add to this list but at least now you have a list of foods that you can enjoy and hopefully you will have more fun eating healthy, delicious and nutritious meals.
