It almost seems contradictory at first – how can vinegar, an acidic substance in itself, treat a symptom that is already too acidic? Wouldn’t apple cider vinegar and acid reflux only make things worse? Believe it or not it actually has helped many people find the relief they have been searching for without using prescriptions or over-the-counter medications. To see how apple cider vinegar works in treating acid reflux let’s take a closer look at ACV.
Most people are familiar with the distilled white vinegar you can find at any local grocery store. This kind of vinegar is typically used for things such as pickling, cleaning and might even be used in some natural remedies for acne or cuts and scrapes. The next type of vinegar people are familiar with is balsamic vinegar which is used for cooking and salad dressings. These vinegars have there uses but the type we want to use to treat acid reflux is apple cider vinegar. More specifically apple cider vinegar that has not been distilled or filtered and is referred to as the “mother of vinegar.”
This vinegar is created from organically grown apples that have been aged and crushed into apple cider. The unfiltered vinegar will appear to be brownish yellow in color and contains what is called the “mother of vinegar” or the “mother.” All of the healthy properties live in this stringy glob that floats around in the vinegar. This stringy glob doesn’t sound to appetizing, but this is where all of the health benefits come from.
Basically, how it works is that there may not be an adequate amount of stomach acid to properly and thoroughly digest the stomach contents. This might be caused by a number of factors such as taking an antacid which would neutralize the needed stomach acid. It also may be caused by taking a protein pump inhibitor (PPI) medication that would cause the stomach to stop producing gastric juices.
Unfiltered apple cider vinegar mimics stomach acid and helps in balancing the needed acids in the stomach. This in turn helps your body to properly digest food. So, this not only helps with your acid reflux but also with proper and healthy digestion along with other healthy benefits.
Here are some suggestions for an apple cider vinegar acid reflux solution:
Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 8 ounces of warm or room temperature water before a meal. You can add honey to help with the taste. Also, be aware that since apple cider vinegar is acidic be sure to thoroughly rinse your mouth afterward to prevent the erosion of your tooth enamel.
Now that you have more information about acid reflux vinegar and how it works, the next step is to try it and see if it helps you like it has many others who have tried it.
